the year 1997, along with the traditional excellent performances and achievements
that our school has accomplished in the fields of academics, sport and
other co-curricular activities, our school recorded, among many others,
the following highlights:
Chung
Hua Reign Supreme
(April 5, 1997)
Our school shines again for
the 11th year in the Miri-Bintulu Division sports meet with
46 Gold, 18 Silver, 17 Bronze, 412 Points.
• Best Group 1 girl athelete
Lilen ak Umpa from our school rewrote the 100m hurdles record with
16 seconds.
• Best Group 1 boy athelete
Sia Shao Xiong also from our school soared 1.96m in the high jump,
rewriting the old record of 1.86m.
• Amir Bee Siang
took the Best Group 2 boy ahtelete with 4 gold in 100m, 4x100m, 400m &
4x400m.

Concert a success

We just had our concert
organized by the Chinese Club of the school on the 27 and 28 of Febuary.
The theme this year
is "³¬Ô½×Ô¼º, ÔÙ´´¸ß·å."

Chung Hua forms Electronics Club
(October 2, 1996)
SMB
Chung Hua has become the first school in Miri to form an Electronics Club
to cater for its growing student population. An experienced electronic
and electrical engineer Mr. William Ting volunteered to help the school.
National
Coach to build Strong Rugby team
(September 23, 1996)
Chief coach of national
rugby team Mr. Ishak bin Abidin has formed and will train a team in SMB
Chung Hua with the aim of raising the standard of rugby to national leven
in 3 years. Mr. Ishak has been the director of coaching of Malaysian Rugby
Union and was the chief coach of national team to the 10th Asian
rugby tournament in Bangkok in1986 and the 13th Asian tournament
in Seol in 1992.

Our school has emerged
champions in all the seven years eversince the competition started in Miri
until now.

We won the MSSS (Sarawak
Inter-Divisional secondary schools sport meet) for the third time since
1994. SMB Chung Hua won with 262 points (35 golds) while second place goes
to SMK Serian with 75 points.

for a Decade!
(March 31, 1996)
SMB Chung Hua has won
the MSSMB (Miri-Bintulu divisions secondary schools sports meet) with 60
golds, 27 silver and 12 bronze with 533 points. This marked the 10th
consecutive years SMB Chung Hua as a champion of the meet. Our closest
competitor, SMK Bintulu grabbed 3 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze with 103
points.
Block
E dismantled
(March 13, 1996)
Block E, which housed
a hostle upstairs and 4 classrooms below, was built about 50 years ago.
It was one of the two first buildings (the other is Block A) of our school.
Block E was dismantled on March 13, 1996 to give way to a RM1.5 million
four-storey concrete block consisting of twelve classrooms and two science
laboratories. The whole building is donated by the most well-known philanthropist
in this part of the world, Tan Sri Datuk Ting Pek Khiing and wife Puan
Sri Datin Chai Yu Lan.

Chung Hua goes Internet
(August 12, 1996)
SMB Chung Hua Miri has
officially launched its homepage which went online on March 31 1996, making
the school the first to hog onto the Internet in this region. Principal
Dr. Fong Onn Min, who officiated at the launching ceremony, said the homepage
designed and upadated by David Lee Chiing Liang, a Form 4 student of the
school. Dr. Fong said that the main purposes of having such facilities
are to promote the image id the school and to encourage students and parents
to make use of the internet. "We hope to encourage more parents and students
of the school to make use of the internet which has become a popular and
important communications tool in the world today," said Dr. Fong.

Chung Hua has the most 8As achievers in PMR 1995
(December 1, 1995)
SMB Chung Hua has not only the
largest number of 8A-scorers (21) in Miri-Bintulu Division, but also in
the State of Sarawak. Second in the list is SMB Methodist, Sibu with 19
8A's, followed by SMB St. Teresa, Kuching and SMB Sacred Heart, Sibu with
11 each.

Pek Khiing, the renowned philanthropist and his wife Mdm Chai Yu Lan (later
Dato Paduka) became our school's first Permanent Honorary Presidents.

Our Honorary President
Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing was conferred Datuk Paduka (D.11.M.S.) by the Sultan
of Kedah.

Mdm Chai Yu Lan was conferred Dato Paduka Mahkota (D.F.M.S.) by the Sultan
of Selangor.
Our
Principal Dr. Fong Onn Min received A.M.N. award.
Our most beloved Principal,
Dr. Fong Onn Min was conferred A.M.N. award by the Yang Dipertuan Agong
of Malaysia.
Completion
of New Academic Building.
The school's new teaching
block, Dato Faduka Chai Yu Lan Academic Building donated wholly by the
school's Honorary Presidents was completed, and more than 600 students
of lower secondary classes moved in on 10. 7. 1997.
The four-storey magnificent building houses 12 classrooms, 2 science laboratories,
1 guest room and stores.

ceremony of Lee Teck Fook Road
A RM50,000.00 - tarred
road leading from the school road to Lee Teck Fook liall was officially
declared open by Mr. & Mrs. Lee Teck Fook on 18. 06. 1997.
Mr. Lee Fook is our present Chairman of the school Board who donated the
road and many other facilities in the school. Jalan Lee Teck Fook
was thus named after him.

Sri Ting received Honorary Doctorate Degree from USC
Heartiest congratulations
to our school's President, Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Ting Pek Khiing for being
conferred honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration by the
well-known University of Southern California (U.S.C.), USA.
Tan Sri's full title and
designation is Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Dr. Ting Pek Khiing (P.S.M., D.Ii.M.S.,
D.F.M.S., F.G.B.K., Ph.D.)
Mr.
Albert Ong Tol of All Coaches
One of our athletic
coaches, Mr. Albert Ong Ngee liong, came top in the list of participants
sitting for the athletic coaches' training course examination conducted
by the International Amateur Athletics Association (I.A.A.F.) and the International
Olympic Council (1. 0. C.) from July to August.
Headboy
Yau Kah Tak Top Achiever in SPM Exam.
Our 1995/96 headboy
Yau Kah Tak scored 8 Al's in last year's SPM examination (the result of
which was announced on 1. 4. 1997 and came out as top achiever
in Miri-Bintulu Division and Northern Sarawak. He won a Sime Darby and
K.L. Shell Scholarship for university studies.

Chung Hua - Champions for 11 years in a stretch.
Our school continued
to reign supreme in the sports arena in Miri-Bintulu Division (and Sarawak)
for 11 years in a row since 1987. This year, we captured 46 gold, 18 silver
and 17 bronze (the second school secured only 1 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze).
Again we had the largest number of athletes at MSS Malaysia meet in the
whole country and managed to bring the championship title back to Sarawak
(20 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze, whereas Penang captured 13, 15 and 4
respectively). As for the last 1 0 years, Dr. Fong and Mr. Yii were the
team manager and chief coach, respectively. The captain was Sia Shao Xiong
(T.4C).

Chung Hua is English Debate Champion.
Our debaters Benedict
Polycarp, Chua Hui Jin, Lindsey Yeo Lin Sze, Lee Chiing Liang and lieng
Ching Fei took the first prize in the Miri Zone Interschool English debate
competitions, Miri-Subis Zone, Miri- Bintulu Division and so far, the Northern
Sarawak Secondary School English debate competitions. They really have
done us pround, especially in defeating last year's national champion team.

Chung Hua is the most beautiful School in Sarawak.
Again, Our school
captured first prize in landscaping and compound beautification and cleanliness
competition at Miri-Division and state levels. (The result at national
level competition is yet to be announced). The result of last year's
competition was announced this year, and saw our school emerging first
in the state (as in all the years ever since such competition started)
and third at national level. No one can therefore denny that SMB Chung
liua is the most beautiful school in Sarawak.
Boniface
Lejau cracks Watson Nyambek's record
Our Form Two 15-year-old
outstanding athlete Boniface Lejau cracked Malaysian fastest runner Watson
Nyambek's records (1 00 M & 200 M) during the Sarawak AAA open athletic
championship in Kuching. Boniface also competed in Perth, Australia
in March 1997 (First runner-up, hurdles) despite his injury and come first
in International Tunas Cemerlang Athletic Meet in Singapore this year.
Of course, as expected, he easily set new records in the 100 M and 200
M events during the nationallevel school (MSSM) meet in Kangar, Perils
this July.
Building
New Car Parks and Part of School Fence
The construction
of new car parks along the school road (approx. 1000 ft.) to accommodate
a hundred vehicles will be completed in November. The front portion of
the side fences was rebuilt (concrete and metal) in June.
Others:
- Our team came first in
Road Safety Quiz Competition organized by Junior Chamber Lutong.
- Our rugby team which emerged
champion at state level will represent the state in the forthcoming national
level rugby competition in Selangor next month (end of November).
This is the first time our rugby team shared the glamour created by our
athletic, basketball, softball, hockey and other teams at the national
scene.
- Besides having several
athletes (e.g. Boniface Lejau, Kong Fe! Chuan, Lee Khin Tat, Lim
Teck Leong, Lee Yen Foon, Wee Bee Fong, Ng Slew Tyng and Lau Lik Khew)
representing the country at international level, we also have students
participating in other games and sports such as football (Denis ak Badit),
and swimming (Huang Sie Ming) at the same level. |
